Grade 7's... the big question is what are the two tpes of mixtures out there, and give an example of both!
Cheers~
This is a place for students to communicate with Mr. Hayward, and other students, in an educational and creative manner. Enjoy!

8 Blogging assignment!
Grade 8's...
Here are your questions...be sure to post your answers with your first name and room number!
1. What are the only two organelles found in plant cells that are not present in animal cells?
2. What organelle is known as the jell-o of the cell, it allows organelles to move?
3. This cell organelle is selectively permeable... what is it?
4. Which cell part contains the DNA, the building blocks of the cell?
5. What does semi permeable mean?
6. How many chambers does the heart have?
7. If you go to the following site... http://science-of-aging.healthaliciousness.com/timelines/cell-history-timeline.php
What was the contribution to cell theory made by Robert Hooke in 1653.
8. Bonus...find another contribution made to cell theory that is not on that website!

Grade 7 Blogging assignment
You will probably find it easier to jot your answers on a sheet of paper and then post at the end.
Question 1: What are the animals talked about in the National Geographic Video on my blog?
Question 2: What is the change of state going from solid to gas called?
Question 3: What is the website the I want you to go look at in the "Grade 7 and 8" latest post.
Question 4: What state of matter do we describe to the molecules as 'vibrating' in place.
Question 5: Give a brief description on how molecules of a gas move.
Question 6: What is one example in real life of a change of state?
Now Leave your name and room number!

Grade 7 Challenge!
Well this is a special challenge only for the grade 7's.
Mr. Hayward has a one car garage, and a parking pad at his home. His wife uses the garage to stop frost from forming on the windshield during the cold winter. What is the name of this phase transition that Mr. Hayward's wife is trying to avoid?

Grade 8 Challenge!
Well I told you it would come so here it is...
The first student to answer these correctly will receive a special award, don't think this will be too simple...also be aware that there are two parts to the question! There is a chemical called ATP that is produced in cells.
1. What process is this part of?
2. Where does this process occur in the cell?
To level the playing field no answers will be posted until the contest closes. Answers may only be submitted starting October 27th at 5:00!

Using our basic knowledge of cell organelles, which of them are visible in this image of a plant under a microscope?
Grade 7 Lab: Measuring Volume
1. Using your knowledge from our classroom lab procedure, explain to me the minimum number of steps it would take to collect 861mL of fluid using a 75 mL Graduated cylinder?
2. What is the volume of water in this graduated cylinder?

8 Science
Again this week we will dive into the mysteries of the organelles in our and plants basic unit of life. The cell! (No not that creepy film with J.Lo in it). A two part question:
1. Of all the organelles discussed in class, which are the two that are only found inside plant cells?
2. Why do you think the plant cell has an extra layer of protection around it, and animal cells do not?
Bonus: This year's Nobel Prize in physics went to a pair of scientists who created a sheet of what molecule, just one atom thick!

7 Science Lab
Good morning grade sevens! This week you will be performing a volume measurement laboratory. This will help you master the skill of measuring different volumes of different quantities of liquids using graduated cylinders and beakers of varying sizes. In this light I pose a classic question that asks you to think about volume:
Question: You are given the task of measuring out 4 litres of water. You need exactly that much...no more no less or the world may explode(not really). You are given an unlimited supply of water, a 5 litre, and 3 litre jug. How do you do it?
Bonus: This question was featured in a classic action film with Samuel L. Jackson and starring an actor with the initials B.W.!

Bodies...the exhibition...
Well I have quite a few students who have been extremely interested in the Bodies exhibit in town. I am curious to hear your reflections on the exhibit. If you have had the chance to go, or do not wish to go and would like to explain why, feel free to make a comment! Please be careful regarding your comments as this is a sensitive issue.
Talk to your parents if you would like further information.

THE ANSWERS!
Grade 7 Science:
The particle theory has 4 (Yes Izzy four... thank you) parts (you were only responsible for 3 for this blog), but by eliminating the science jargon we can get to the heart of the idea.
1. Everything is made of atoms!
2. Those atoms are always moving.
3. There have to be spaces between them...so they can move!
4. If we heat them up they go way faster. (kind of like if I locked you in a closet and turned up the heat! You would start to literally bounce off the walls to get out!)
Grade 8 Science:
Who was the mystery scientist? The quickest way to the solution would be to use a search engine and your notes of who the scientists involved in Cell theory are!
The answer is: Theodor Schwann, he helped to determine that all living things are made of cells, and that cells are the most basic unit of life!
The other Dudes are Schleiden, and Virchow!
A big thank you to ALL those who contributed. You are making this a success!
Congrats Dylan as the 1st grade 7 with the correct answer, and Faith combined with Janel's answer for the grade 8's!
