7 Science Lab

Good morning grade sevens! This week you will be performing a volume measurement laboratory. This will help you master the skill of measuring different volumes of different quantities of liquids using graduated cylinders and beakers of varying sizes. In this light I pose a classic question that asks you to think about volume:

Question: You are given the task of measuring out 4 litres of water. You need exactly that much...no more no less or the world may explode(not really). You are given an unlimited supply of water, a 5 litre, and 3 litre jug. How do you do it?

Bonus: This question was featured in a classic action film with Samuel L. Jackson and  starring an actor with the initials B.W.!

  1. You fill up the 5 liter, then pour as much as you can into the 3 liter. leaving 2 liters in the 5 liter jug. Empty the 3 liter jug. Put the 2 liters from the 5 liter jug into the 3 liter jug. Fill up the whole 5 liter jug. pour into the 3liter jug from the 5 liter jug as much as you can (1 liter) and BAM YOU HAVE 4 LITERS IN THE 5 LITER JUG. I'm a world hero,(you can post this if you want Mr. Hayward but I couldn't stand to leave an un answered question :'( IM SORRY.

  4. so i would take the five liter fill it up, then pour 1 liter into the three liter and pour the three liter with one liter in it out! did you not ask us a question in class like this last year???

for the bonus...i googled it there are 3 answers that all fit the description

    1) Pulp Fiction (1994)

    2) Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995)

    3) Unbreakable (2001)

****please note i was only born for 1 out of all three and back then i did not and still don't watch R rated movies...or at least i think i don't but i know i at least did not back in 2001!

  6. k heres what you do... you have to start out by thinking that 5 + 3 = 8(2x the amount you need)so the simple thing would to fill the 5ver up hten empty about 3 liters of it into the 3 liter thing giving you 2 liters( because 5-3=2) then you empty the 3 liter jug and put that water in the 3 liter jug because thtas all you really can do( unless they give you another container) then you do the process over again without emptying the 3l con. so when you do this again only 1 liter is gonna be drained thus giving the 5 lit. only 4 lit thus answering your question.

    anti-man
