8 Science

Again this week we will dive into the mysteries of the organelles in our and plants basic unit of life. The cell! (No not that creepy film with J.Lo in it). A two part question:
         1. Of all the organelles discussed in class, which are the two that  are only found inside plant cells?
         2. Why do you think the plant cell has an extra layer of protection around it, and animal cells do not?

Bonus: This year's Nobel Prize in physics went to a pair of scientists who created a sheet of what molecule, just one atom thick!

  1. cell wall and Chloroplasts.
I think the plant has a extra protection because unless it's one of those bitting plants, it can't protect it's self. unlike animals and human who can.

BONUS: Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov.

ps: the bonus sounds cool. i'm going to go look it up. (:

    m-dog. (:

danielle says... i am sooooo lucky i brought home my science binder today!
    AND
for numero uno i am going to say cell wall and chloroplasts

for number 2 i think that it is because it (the plant) has like Madi said no real protection in the big bad wilderness where plants first grew and so animals have a harder time eating them.

and i am going to say andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov. the molecule was one of the carbon variety!

all of you people reading this should come with Me Madi Silas and Mr.Hayward and run at lunch on Wednesdays when it starts :) and even if you don't like running you should come anyways because

1# you probably will like it!

2# i put work into typing this lovely post and you think it is such a nice advertisement that it makes you want to go

    danielle :)

  3. 1, The cell wall and chloroplasts.
2, Well I think if the cell wall wasn't part of the plant cell it wouldn't be so "rectangular" or "square" as you say. I don't see why there's more protection because not like it works against animals and ...us, we still eat it. Unless its for sunburns (: Animals and Humans can get sunburn, but plants can't. HA I BET THATS IT!

BONUS. Gold. They shot a beam of light at a thin piece of gold and you could see the light go through it on to a screen. I guessed on what I know. <:) I hope I got it (:

    I feel so smart ^^

  4. OH! and animals do not need extra protection because they don't need the sun to grow and produce food. Plants do. (:
So when an animal trys to go in the sun and grow food pretending to be a plant it gets burned as a punishment. THEY HAVE TO EARN THE FOOD THEMSELVES.

  6. Just a word of caution...people are forgetting the bonus section about what type of molecule the Nobel Prize was for!

It's Graphite or Graphene. (: sorry read it wrong,

also, EVERYBODY SHOULD COME RUNNING. PLEASE. (: I WOULD MAKE ME HAPPY. (:

  8. danielle who is changing her answer due to more research :POctober 13, 2010 at 6:15 PM

i did some more research on http://nobelprize.org/ and i am revising the past answer made by myself to graphene. turns out i did not read it clearly the first time! what is graphene??? i just looked it up and all i found was crazy scientific mumble jumble (teehee funny word) and it made no sense to the average human brain...

  9. cell walls and chloroplasts

plants need the extra protection because they can't move so there stuck and need the protection from heavy weather and uv rays but they do need the sun to go through photosynthesis.

as you said last year, Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov shined a light through a piece of gold and saw light on the other side on the black paper.

i think the molecule was graphite

  10. silas likes to run says

cell walls cuz plants have no protction from winds and stuff so they need an extra layer of cell so they dont die.

also Chloroplasts (chloroplast is from the Greek words chloros that means green,), they help with food gathering aka photosyntesis.

BONUS they created a new material called graphane.

im gunna join running club :P
